Guidelines for Earning the Fannin County Conservation Badge
The Fannin County Chamber of Commerce invites local businesses in Blue Ridge, GA, to join our Commitment to Conservation Program. This initiative recognizes and rewards businesses that actively adopt eco-friendly practices, demonstrating a dedication to preserving the natural beauty and resources of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Participating businesses that meet the program requirements will earn a Conservation Badge (or plaque), showcasing their commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

Requirements
To qualify for the Commitment of Conservation, businesses must adopt practices in at least three of the following categories:
- Community Engagement and Education
- Host or participate in conservation initiatives
- Offer educational workshops online content promoting conservation awareness
- Encourage employees to volunteer for conservation programs by providing paid volunteer hours
- Engage with the chamber of commerce in volunteer opportunities
- Waste Reduction and Recycling
- Implement a recycling program for paper, plastics, glass, and other materials
- Reduce single-use plastics by offering alternatives (e.g., reusable or biodegradable options)
- Encourage waste reduction through digital receipts, reusable containers, and bulk purchasing
- Energy Efficiency
- Upgrade to energy-efficient lighting, appliances, and equipment
- Use renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind, where feasible
- Monitor and reduce energy consumption through regular audits
- Dark Sky location
- Water Conservation
- Install water-saving devices, such as low-flow faucets and toilets
- Use rainwater harvesting systems for irrigation
- Educate employees and customers about water-saving habits
- Contribution to trout water preservation
- Sustainable Sourcing
- Source goods and materials locally to reduce the carbon footprint
- Prioritize suppliers that follow sustainable and ethical practices
- Use eco-friendly, biodegradable, or recyclable materials in your products or packaging
- Wildlife and Habitat Preservation
- Support local conservation efforts, such as tree-planting projects or wildlife habitat protection
- Avoid the use of harmful pesticides or chemicals that may harm local ecosystems
- Provide educational materials about local flora and fauna to customers
- Contribute to native species, pollinators, and pursue environmental opportunities

Maintaining the Award
To maintain the Conservation Badge, businesses must continue to uphold their conservation practices and provide an annual report outlining their ongoing efforts. Periodic re-evaluations may occur to ensure compliance.
