7 Blue Ridge Water Adventures To Try This Summer
With the most beautiful rivers and lakes in the south, Blue Ridge is filled with Summer fun. Here's where to find some of the best:
80 percent of Lake Blue Ridge shoreline is in the Chattahoochee National Forest. The crystal clear aquamarine waters of Lake Blue Ridge make it one of Georgia's most picturesque mountain lakes.
The 3,290-acre lake and surrounding area offer campsites, several boat ramps, a full-service marina and public swimming and picnic areas. Blue Ridge reservoir is 11 miles long and has 65 miles of shoreline, 25 percent of which is developed.
The balance is land in the Chattahoochee National Forest, managed by the U.S. Forest Service. The lake was formed when Blue Ridge Dam was constructed on the Toccoa River in 1930 by the Toccoa Electric Power Company. At the time it was built, the dam was the largest earthen dam in the Southeast. The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) purchased the facility in 1939 for hydroelectric power production.
Located two miles from the intersection of Hwy 76 and Aska Road (look for the sign on the left), the Lake Blue Ridge Dayuse Area is a U.S. Forest Service passive recreation area with a beautiful view of the lake and free boat ramp. The area is also a good place for quiet walks and easy bike rides. There is a short, easy hike along the shoreline, and also a one-mile paved loop road that is popular for walking. Kayak and paddle boards are available for rent. Alternate directions: In Blue Ridge from Old Hwy 76, turn on Dry Branch Road and follow less than one mile.
Morganton Point Campground is the place to take the kids to the "beach" and is the only developed campground on Lake Blue Ridge. It is a great spot for camping, fishing, swimming and boating. The campground opens in April and closes at the end of October. Dates may vary due to weather and water levels. There are 43 camp sites available, 16 of which are lakefront and two group sites. Each site has a ground mounted cooking grill, picnic table, lantern pole and tent pad. There are public bathrooms, one of which has hot showers. City water is available. Make reservations.
The picnic area has eight tables, and the covered picnic shelter is available by reservation. Morganton Point Swimming Area is a pebble beach, so be sure to bring some water shoes. Lake Blue Ridge Outfitters has kayak and paddle board rentals located on the beach.
There is a paved boat ramp 1/4 mile west of the campground and beach. Boat trailer parking is available in picnic area.
